Believing in the combination of instrumental and electroacoustic music, Julien-Robert composes mixed music. He uses the technology's possibilities to integrate video to his work. His pieces of music have been performed in England, France, Argentina, Kosovo, United States, Australia, Portugal and Canada in various festivals like Sonoimagenes, Spark festival, SOUNDplay festival, Remusica Festival, ICMC, UVM, Totally Huge New Music festival, Studio 300 or Opensound. His projects have been funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec and the SOCAN foundation. His pieces have been played by well-known musicians like Walter Boudreau with the SMCQ, Lorraine Vaillancourt, Véronique Lacroix, Julien Compagne and Krista Martynes. He won a first price at the Sond’Ar-te electric ensemble competition 2014, Serge-Garant of the SOCAN Foundation award 2014, a third price in the 2011 Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award Competition and got a honorable mention at the Fresh Minds Festival 2013. He got commissions from ECM+, Paramirabo ensemble, Codes d’accès, NAISA, Vidéographe, [iks] and the SMCQ.
His good versatility led him to collaborate with choreographers (Marc Boivin, Véronique Gaudreau), film directors (Charles-Louis Thibault, Jules Saulnier, Vladimir Kanic, Louis-Thomas Pelletier, Pascale Marcotte, Yan Breuleux) and theater directors (Lou Arteau). He composed music for dance and film which have been screened in many festivals like Short Film Corner du Festival de Cannes, les Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québécois, le festival Juste pour rire, Off-courts de Trouville, le Regard sur le court métrage au Saguenay, le festival du Nouveau Cinéma.
In 2009, he completed a master in mixed music at the Université de Montréal with Denis Gougeon and Jean Piché on a project of mixed music with video funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He did composition workshops which gave him the opportunity to study with famous music composers like Ana Sokolovic, Yves Daoust, Alexandre Burton, Hans Tutschku, Natasha Barrett, Paul Rudy et Jean-François Laporte. In 2007, he completed a BAC in mixed music at the Université de Montréal with Denis Gougeon and Jean Piché along with Bret Battey and Peter Batchelor at De Monfort University (UK).
